A lovely insight into the American Dream from a foreign perspective. A really nicely written with enjoyable descriptive narrative about being a foreigner in the land of sunshine. A real insight into a world rarely available from an honest and enjoyable perspective.
This is the second book I have read from author Dame DJ. Like the first one, I was taken on a journey. Last time was from Paris to Monaco; this time it was Florida. Not only that but the narrator and their companion "S" spend the majority of their time staying in a country club.
I have never been to a country club but have always wanted to visit one just to know what it's like. Through Dame DJ, I have found out! I enjoyed the descriptions and well written story. I can't wait to see where I'm taken next!

I thought ‘Beyond the Wall Moving into a Golf & Country Club in Florida’ was a really unique read. The book follows an experience that I would never be able to have, so it was nice to peek into the life of someone who moved into a country club.
Dame DJ does a great job of illustrating all the quirks of this kind of life. Readers really get an insider look at what life is really like and how to adapt.
Maybe I missed something but I thought this book was very poorly written and, frankly, a huge waste of time. I kept reading to the very end, hoping to find some kind of connection between the writer and the reader, but there was none. The description of Florida was on target and other than reading about the lovely weather and the beautiful sunsets the vignettes were cryptic and void of interest. This has to be one if the most boring and ridiculous books I've ever tried to read. This book had the potential of offering a really interesting look into a community that few have the opportunity to visit. Instead it was simply worthless and lacking in substance. One star * for effort, but that's a stretch.
As someone who has lived in Florida for many years and knows their way around these large gated communities, I am fascinated to hear how someone unaccustomed to them might view them. A person from another country would be a perfect candidate and author Dame DJ has written a delightful book about her experiences in living and playing in one of these monstrous communities in her "Behind the Wall". I loved the tales of tennis, evening dinners, encounters with strangers and so much more. I found the depiction of life in the Sunshine State to be quite accurate and the writing to be very well done. Recommended.
