Twelve-year old Rebecca wants to be a dog sled racer. Young and inexperienced, she sees there are many challenges ahead of her. From animals attacking her dogs to blizzards, there's a lot to learn and obstacles to overcome. With determination and a love for her dogs, she sets out to become a musher who not only travels far and wide, but also gains the trust of her huskies. I'm neither an outdoorsy person nor a dog owner, but I became involved with Rebecca and her story. The character development is excellent and I felt for Rebecca during her highs and lows. This MG novel is educational throughout: a glossary of terms and a detailed illustration of the sled and dog positions accompanies the story.

Dogsled Dreams Terry Lynn Johnson 9780982642344 Books Reviews

This debut novel by Terry Lynn Johnson is about a girl who dreams of racing her dogs in the frozen north. This middle grade novel is fast-paced, stuffed full of doggy goodness and racing lingo, and charmed the anorak off me from the very first page. Johnson has created a story that will appeal equally to 7-year-old boys who love puppies and 12-year-old girls who dream of being on American Idol. That is quite a feat, and mark me impressed.

Rebecca lives with her dad and step-mom, raising their Alaskan Huskies. She dreams of being a champion musher and doesn't shy away from the hard, cold work of caring for the dogs she loves. But will her dad ever let her run her own team? Or even race? One doggy adventure after another pulls Rebecca and her team toward the fame she imagines in her hilarious daydreams of success. And throughout, Rebecca's love for her dogs shines as bright as the northern snow.

The book has beautiful descriptions of the dogs and their snowy world. There's even a glossary in the back with all the dog mushing terms, and a teacher's guide on Johnson's website. But I'm sure this would be a challenging read for young advanced readers, and a simply delightful story for the older ones. Except for the occasional porcupine quill encounters, there's no violence to speak of in this lovely book. I highly recommend Dogsled Dreams for advanced readers as young as five.
I imagine the genesis of Dogsled Dreams began when Terry Lynn Johnson worked for a dogsledding company one winter and eighteen beautiful huskies followed her home. In this debut novel, Johnson weaves an exciting and engaging story about twelve-year old Rebecca, who loves dogsledding more than anything. In fact, while other kids her age are trying to attract boys, Rebecca dreams of being a famous musher.

She's learned everything she knows about dogsledding from her dad. Now, he's letting Rebecca train the new sled pups and has given her the okay to lead the race team in the Thunder Dog. What follows is a thrilling story which will leave readers on the edge of their seat wanting more.

Terry's character development of Rebecca is fantastic. She does an excellent job of having the reader experience a lot of the anxieties and self-doubt Rebecca feels as she's getting ready to take on the biggest challenge in her young life. I was especially pleased with the positive portrayal of Rebecca's father. As a father to a young girl, I was thrilled to see Rebecca have such high hopes and dreams for herself, and to see her father support her. This is a beautiful story both dads and their daughters can enjoy reading and discussing together!

This is a book I would buy for my grandchildren. And I liked it very much, too! When the book I ordered arrived in the mail, I first read the logline on the back of the beautifully designed cover "Twelve-year-old Rebecca dreams of becoming a famous dog sled racer. She's an inventive but self-doubting musher who tackles blinding blizzards, wild animal attacks, puppy training, and flying poo missiles. All of her challenges, though, seem easier than living up to the dogs' trust in her abilities." I then turned to the back pages and found a brief Glossary of Terms. I never knew what a musher was. Now I know it's "a person who runs dog sleds." The definitions about dog sledding enlightened me, and together with crisply written dialogue and vivid scenes I was drawn into Rebecca's world.

The following is an example of the author's writing skills Twelve harnesses, tied by a neck line, hung from a nail in the spruce frame. The smell of wet dog drifted around the tent. "Better get some sleep; we'll run the big loop tomorrow." Her dad pulled out his winter-weight sleeping bag and laid it on his wooden platform...."I hear something," Rebeca whispered. "I think it's wolves." She knew that they sometimes attacked dogs." Her dad lifted his head and listened. "They're far, far away. Go back to sleep."

Her father runs dogs, and encourages and supports her dream of becoming a famous musher. Her immediate goal is to run her dogs in the Thunder Dog race. During the training, she encounters opposition from a friend and wrestles with her feelings for her step-mother. My desire to know how Rebecca, in this coming of age story, fulfilled her dream and worked out her personal relationships kept me turning pages. And I learned a lot about dog sledding!
Not long enough
This is a wonderful book and well written. It is easily used in elementary curriculum and would make a great addition to the classroom.
Others have given the basic plot, I just wanted to say I'm so glad I bought this book! It was wonderful and exciting and I hope these characters will continue in another adventure. I've mailed a copy to my eight year old niece! She's going to love it!
Dogsled Dreams, the debut novel by Terry Lynn Johnson, is a delightful ride. Rebecca dreams of competing in her first big dogsled race. Along the way, she not only learns more about the sport of dogsledding, but also about herself.
A charming story for any middle grade girl or boy who likes adventure and dogs
