Conrad Fate A Chrestomanci Book Diana Wynne Jones Books

I have very surely fallen in love with Jones's talent for storytelling. Since discovering the Howl's series, I've been jumping from story to story and I'm never disappointed. The Chrestomanci series is very different from the Howl's series with settings being countries here on Earth, but the way Jones has of bringing settings, scenes, and characters to life has not changed. Christopher Chant shows the development of growing from boy to teen, Millie becomes a bit more reliant on others and open to help (rather than taking charge), and Gabriel De Whitt comes off more like a father figure (the old school kind that showed concern yet brooked no nonsense). Conrad was a nice addition to the Chrestomanci world. He's resistant to the charms of Christopher but is still smart enough to respect him and recognize skill. I liked the way these main characters interacted. It truly brought texture to the story. I will miss being wrapped up in this colorful world... So of course I'll be buying the next story as soon as I get a chance! I recommend this series to anyone looking for an escape from the cookie-cutter Sci-Fant young adult books of this generation. You won't find any 21st century cliches, trendy settings, or flat dialogue here. :-) Happy reading!!

Conrad Fate A Chrestomanci Book Diana Wynne Jones Books Reviews

A fun all-ages story with a nice amount of Dianna Wynne Jones' multi-dimensional magic.
Perhaps not the most wonderful book in this series but still an engrossing read which helps fill in the missing years between The Lives of Christopher Chant and Charmed Life. I wish we could have seen Conrad reappear in a short story or two, the way Tonio did, but in its way that's just another recommendation for this full-length tale!
As the consumate storyteller, Diana Wynne Jones has once again triumphed. Returning to the stage is the indifagitable Chrestomanci, this time before his title and only known as Christopher, an arrogant and frequently foolish young man. Joining him is young Conrad, a carefully conniving and determined fellow, whose cursed fate has condemned him to the role of murderer. Set in a distant and alternate world, Conrad's Fate then decends into highly controled madness and a dozon threads which tie themselves neatly into bows.

Revealing details of the character's lives between The Lives of Christopher Chant and Charmed Life, Conrad's Fate combines humor, intrigue and wild magic into a twisting, turning tower of a tale. I highly recomend this, and anything else by this supurb writer.
Dianna Wynne Jones is amazing and the Chronicles of Chrestomanci are great. I really love her world building skills. If you like fantasy, she is definitely worth a read.
This is the fourth book in the Chrestomanci series. Like the rest of her books, this book has excellent character devlopment and easy to follow, yet exciting, plot lines. Her books fully create the worlds they take place in and carry me away from the mundane. For these reasons, she has been a favourite author of mine for years. Don't get me wrong, this book was really good. I couldn't put it down and it was finished too soon for my tastes, but it just isn't quite the same caliber as some of her others. Deep Secret, The Merlyn Conspiracy, The Nine Lives of Christopher Chant, and Charmed Life just have a quality this book doesn't. It just wasn't quite as magical.
Finally, a Chrestomanci story that deals with young Christopher, rather than dealing with Cat (when Christopher is the grown-up Chrestomanci). I have been quite intrigued with Christopher and Millie since reading "The Lives of Christopher Chant" about, oh, 10 years ago, and was delighted to read this book and find it was about their teenage years. Of course it is mostly about Conrad, a new character in one of the Related Worlds, but it's got plenty of Christopher to satisfy me. The story was brisk and enjoyable.

As usual, one tiny niggle...sometimes in Ms. Jones' books, when she is building up to the climax, a bunch of people come into the story (as with the King's Summoners, police, Gabriel de Witt, etc. near the end of this book) and a lot of things are explained very quickly. I don't consider myself "slow" but I have often felt that Ms. Jones rushes through these explanation scenes a bit too quickly. This book is no exception. The officials all show up, it is quickly announced that some of the people we've been learning about are not what they seem, and then things wind up pretty quickly (people getting taken away, etc.). I always have to go back and carefully reread the parts like that, because they are always a bit sketchy and they seem a bit hastily done. However, that's not going to detract from my 5-star rating, because it only takes a little while to go back and reread that.

"Year of the Griffin" used to be my favorite DWJ book because I laughed so much while reading it, but "Conrad's Fate" now has that honor. I laughed a lot with this one, too, plus...it has Christopher Chant... -)
I learned a great deal about what is like to be a servant in English society from this book. More importantly, I learned how badly adults can mistreat and misuse their children. On the other hand, this is one of Wynne-Jones's best coming of age stories. It is well worth the time spent reading it and when you put it aside, it makes a very good second read. You will catch things that you missed the first time you read it.
