The Lost Key A Brit in the FBI Catherine Coulter J T Ellison Books
Once again, I find myself reviewing a Catherine Coulter book. And once again, this reader is blown away by this outstanding book. I have been a fan of Ms. Coulter since the first SAVICH/Sherlock FBI book and it has been all uphill since. I have such a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this author can continue to give her fans such amazing books with equally amazing characters and stories. Now, teaming with J.T.Ellison, another great author, the fans are treated with a new series, a Brit in the FBI. If the first two books are any indication of the strength of this series, fear not. This series is also filled with amazing characters and equally as thrilling stories. Simply adore Nick and Mike. Right up there with Savich and Sherlock. And the best part of reading both series is that the cross-over of character is like old home week. This fan has been reading these books so long that starting a new one is like seeing a good friend you haven't seen in s while or going to a family reunion. Ms. Ellison as well has given her fans two intense female characters in Jackson and Owens. So, of course, a book co-written by these two women has to terrific. And as you approach the last page of the Lost Key, you do not want it to end. Then you read the last page and you are elated to realize that we will see this cast of characters again. And then there is Nemesis coming in July and we are once again reunited with Savich and Sherlock. Thank you both for two wonderful books and the time spent reading them.Tags : Amazon.com: The Lost Key (A Brit in the FBI) (9780399164767): Catherine Coulter, J. T. The Lost Key A Brit in the FBI Catherine Coulter J T Ellison Books Reviews
Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison have created a wonderful new character. Nicholas Drummond is interesting and intriguing. He has a brilliant mind and he uses it well. He is embarrassed by his family position and wealth and tries to keep his new American collegues from finding out just how "important" he really is. His relationship with his new partner "Mike" has great potential. Possible another Sherlock and Savich? Who knows. I can't wait until the next book when Drummond and Savich team up. Two computer geeks and one super computer, MAX. Sounds like amazing fun. Oh, let's be clear ... I know almost nothing about computers, much less how to program and do other hi-tech stuff. I just like to watch other people do the work, Worth the read. Plan for a whole (rainy, cold) weekend, because you are not going to want to put this one down.
I must admit that I like the character development of the former British agent/policeman in these past two books. I planned on reading a chapter or two before bed, but instead found myself drawn into the story line and I finished the book in one sitting. Unfortunately, I had to work the next day, so I was extremely tired. Any plot that draws you in so deep that you don't want to put the book down, even when your logical inner voice is saying you need to get some sleep, is one that I know I will read again, and again. Enjoy.
The Lost Key had much to recommend it. The main characters--Nicholas Drummond and his FBI partner, Michaela Caine- are gifted and very spunky, and the bad guys are ferocious! It's quite exciting as they try to solve two murders and unravel a clue they have been given--"the key is in the lock". Two young people, quite brilliant, the children of one of the murdered men, add a lot to the story.
BUT, the book is awfully long, and the hero, Nick, is way too perfect. His partner calls him James Bond because he is a Brit who is newly trained as a FBI agent, but he reminds me of Batman, mansion, butler, and all. There is also maybe too much dependence on real and rather unreal 21st century technology innovations--it roams into sci-fi land, where I don't really like to go.
One excellent addition is quite a bit of information about Marie Curie, one of whose discoveries figures in the plot.
I`m very happy that the Nicholas Drummond character is going to be a continuing part of this long standing series. It was clear in the book that introduced him that Nicholas is a different type of protagonist than Dillon Savitch. While both are computer geniuses, there's a much harder edge in Nicholas - the kind that exists in military snipers and covert operatives. People who do the jobs that the majority of us don't want to acknowledge as real. Both Savitch and Drummond regret the act of killing, but Drummond doesn't hesitate to use his hands, face to face, - a different mindset than a gun. This story is a cross between James Bond and the F.B.I. It's action oriented, informative (if taken with a grain of salt) and an easy read. The reason I've given it four stars - ironically, while the authors have succeeded in differentiating Drummond from Savitch, they've simply duplicated Sherlock in Michaela Caine. I hope that in future books the female author will make a concerted effort to give Michaela the individuality that is due to her female characters as well as her male characters. Please, we are not made from cookie cutter molds.
What the hell? I could read earlier books on my in the left-aligned format, but this one comes up with justified margins and says it can't be changed. That is unacceptable. I will update after reading the book, but this is a very annoying situation. I basically paid $400 to get the that allows left-aligned margins and now I'll have some books that prevent it? Sheesh.
OK, I do like this series, although I don't understand Coulter's penchant for calling out song titles as ring tones. Anyway, it's nice to have more FBI thriller novels with new characters and less involvement with children. I like the relationship between Nicholas and Mike, and all the action and skills they get involved with. There is no need for them to become romantically involved, although I'm sure it will come to that. I also like not being able to figure out the ending. I do wonder about one other oddity, though. I first noticed the use of "bespoke" in the Agent Pendergast series by other authors, and now I'm seeing it in Coulter's FBI and Brit series. What's up with that? The word "custom" is just fine for clothing, or even "tailor-made" if you want to be fancy..."bespoke" is just antiquated and supercilious, and when you start using it even for pants, that's just weird.
