Echoes from the Hills of Idaho is written as a life experience of Ruth Butler. It takes us back to a simpler time when people worked hard for what little they could, still full of optimism and appreciation however bad their state of life. The dialogue was some of the best I've come across, you instantly get a sense of the characters. The book tells a fascinating insight into farm life in the 1920's and 1930's and Ruth has done a fantastic job turning her life into a compelling novel.
This is the memoir of a happy childhood (seemingly a rare thing these days!) and has moments that will make you laugh out loud--sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. Despite tragedies which befall the girl portrayed in these memoirs, she retains her childhood innocence and joie de vivre.

If you're not familiar with the early 20th century in the rural American West, this book will open up a fascinating new world. From dry farming to graveyard stew, the joys and challenges of daily living where a family could have been overwhelmed by merely trying to survive are recounted with loving memory.

This would be fun to read out loud to a child, or would make a great gift for a grandparent.
Echoes from the Hills of Idaho by Ruth Butler, enlightens the reader with stories about growing up on a farm in early 1900s when life as we know it today was not even imagined. The author describes vividly a happy childhood in spite challenges brought on by poverty and illness. An entertaining read that brought on some of my childhood memories.
Echoes from the Hills of Idaho is a novel about the stories, and memories, of Ruth Butler who grew up on a farm in Idaho. Right off the bat I was interested in Ruth as the dialogue was engaging and on point. Not every author has the ability to capture the idiosyncrasies of speech, but in this case Butler has done just that, perhaps because she has lived and breathed the life which she portrays in Echoes from the Hills of Idaho. The subtleties of everyday life in America's western states are accurately portrayed making for fast reading.

As an aside, perhaps some of the chapters were a little short, so some readers may find the story jumps too readily. I like to read quickly though, so for me it wasn't a problem. If you are looking for a cheerful read about the resilience of a bright young woman who overcomes the challenges of America's rural west, then Echoes from the Hills of Idaho is a book you will enjoy.

I loved this book. I easily read it in a day because it was a fun read. I have lived in both Idaho and Oregon, so it was easy for me to picture the landscape as the author described it. The pictures included in the book would have helped if I hadn't been able to, though.
This book is full of stories from Ruth's early years, years during which some of my ancestors lived in Idaho, that is what drew me to the book. I can't hear their stories, so I thought I'd read hers in hopes of getting to know them better in some way. This was anything BUT dry reading! Her stories had me laughing like crazy, questioning things (like why Boulder Dam was renamed Hoover Dam, or was it), and thinking about how much harder life was. I am truly grateful for running water, my family, and food on my table. She was one tough lady who sees the bright side of situations and doesn't complain.
I especially loved that when she would come to something, and not know the answer, she would just say she didn't know and keep on telling the story. She didn't Google it. It was just like listening to a great aunt telling stories. I can't wait to read her next book! She is not a trained author, but she is a fabulous story-teller!
In Echoes from the Hills of Idaho Ruth Butler takes the reader back to the early years of her childhood in the 1920s and 1930s. Butler writes with a sometimes raw honesty about family life on a dry farm and then travelling around the country during the years of the depression. She brings us the good times and bad times that accompany not just her life but those of her family and friends. It felt at times that there were more bad times than good as illness, poverty and hunger struck at people already struggling to make a living off the land.

There were times that the author could have refrained from commenting on differences between life then and now. This is something that the reader should do for themselves as Butler's way of painting pictures with words is already good enough for the reader to draw their own conclusions.

An interesting read of a time that some history books fail to properly communicate the deprivation suffered by many ordinary families.
